MultiTiered System of Support

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

MTSS is a research based approach to ensuring learning happens for all children. MTSS is an integrated system of instruction, assessment, and intervention designed to meet the achievement and behavioral needs of all learners. The essential components to MTSS include: 1) Instruction and Intervention, 2) Comprehensive Screening and Assessment System, 3) Implementation of Evidence-Based Practices, 4) Problem-Solving, and 5) Stakeholder/Family Involvement.

MTSS includes three tiers.

Tier I represents the high quality instruction that occurs in the classroom with all students and our goal is to ensure that Tier I instructional strategies meet the learning needs of at least 80% of our students.  Tier II strategies are different from the Tier I approach and target instruction within the classroom;  Tier II strategies may be necessary to meet the needs of about 15% of our students.  Tier III strategies are the highest level of support, requiring more time and typically with an interventionist outside of the classroom. Only about 5% of students should be receiving Tier III instruction at any given time.

At GRCDC, we offer 3 Tiers of support for children in Reading, Math, and Social Emotional Learning.  Tier 2 strategies are implemented by the classroom teachers, in small groups.  Tier 3 strategies are implemented by the classroom teacher and an interventionist who is expert in the area of support that is needed.  We have 3 cycles of assessment and support where student needs are assessed and planned for.  The cycles are in September, December, and March.
